Product Manager, Safety Systems

Job Description

Job Title: Product Manager, Safety Systems. Location: San Francisco, CA‍

Responsibilities:

• Drive the vision, strategy, and execution for OpenAI’s Safety Systems, ensuring safe and impactful deployment of frontier AI models.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with research, engineering, policy, and data teams to embed safety at every stage of model development and deployment.
• Define and implement frameworks to identify and mitigate deployment risks using data analysis and adversarial assessments;
• Create tools, scalable methodologies, and repeatable processes that translate cutting-edge AI safety research into production-ready systems.
• Establish product roadmaps with clear priorities and deliverables aimed at improving safety, reliability, and capability control;
• Develop and refine actionable, high-quality metrics that quantify safety, performance, and user experience across deployments.

Qualifications:

• 6+ years of experience in product management or similar fields, with a focus on AI safety, trust & safety, or integrity systems.
• Strong interdisciplinary background or interest in domains like psychology, philosophy, or human-computer interaction.
• Demonstrated ability to lead in ambiguity, think adversarially, and resolve complex challenges with structured reasoning;
• Excellent communication skills, particularly in articulating complex technical and strategic issues to diverse stakeholders;
• Proven track record of effective collaboration across technical and policy domains in fast-paced environments.

• Compensation range: $325K – $405K + equity
