Job Description

Job Title: Research Engineer, Safety Engineering. Location: San Francisco, CA, USA

Responsibilities:

• Develop and Deploy AI Safety Measures: Design ML pipelines and models focused on safety mitigations during pre-training, post-training, deployment, and real-time monitoring.
• Collaborate Across Disciplines: Partner with researchers, engineers, and product teams to solve complex AI alignment challenges.
• Scale & Optimize: Build scalable data pipelines, optimize model efficiency, and ensure production-readiness of safety mechanisms;
• Lead & Learn: Engage in code reviews, contribute to team learning, and stay current with state-of-the-art ML safety techniques;
• Impact at Scale: Monitor deployed systems to ensure continued alignment with safety standards and societal benefit.

Qualifications:

• Passion for advancing AI safety and deploying AI responsibly.
• Strong experience in deep learning, especially with transformer models.
• Proficiency in PyTorch or TensorFlow;
• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and engineering best practices;
• Hands-on experience in fine-tuning large language models (e.g., RLHF, distillation, supervised learning).
• Comfortable working cross-functionally in high-performance teams.

Compensation & Benefits:

• Salary: $310,000 – $550,000, plus equity options
